NAB 2017 – Zeiss Announces CP.3 and CP.3 XD Lenses

Late on Sunday, Zeiss announced their new line up of Compact Prime lenses.  These lenses feature the same focal length and F-stop as their Milvus line of still lenses.  UPDATE: the origin of these lenses are not entirely apparent.  Some say these are the same optical design, but with new coatings and housings. The housings do look amazing, but those Milvus lenses are superb.  According to this video at cinema5d.com these are the same lens designs, except the 18mm is all new.

This set make so much sense, I’m kicking myself for not even thinking of it.  As a CP.2 owner, I’ve felt the last few years were barren in terms of attention, and I guess now we know why.

ZEISS Compact Prime CP.3 and CP.3 XD Lenses

The ZEISS eXtended Data technology adds new opportunities to simplify and increase the accuracy of the image capture and processing workflow. • A unique technology that provides information about the lens’ distortion and shading characteristics in real time to speed-up the workflow on set and in post-production
    • Lens settings are digitally captured on every frame, avoiding the need to manually record the lens settings for every shot
    • Documentation of the lens’ characteristics enhances creativity by allowing more complex shots to be handled in post-production
